Do We Really Want to Become Slaves to Data?
When Jewelry Starts Monitoring Us, We Forget Why We Wear It
We are entering a very strange era.
Your phone tells you how many steps you took today.
Your watch tells you how many hours you slept last night.
Your fitness tracker tells you your heart rate, blood oxygen, stress level, and recovery status.
Now, even your ring is beginning to tell you:
How well you slept. How much you exercised. What state your body is in.
Everything has become “smart.”
Smartphones. Smartwatches. Fitness trackers. Smart rings…
We are even beginning to believe that:
As long as we have enough data, we will become healthier.

But I want to ask a simple question:
Does data really equal health?
When did we start believing that our bodies need a daily report to function normally?
Imagine this.
You wake up after a night of sleep.
The first thing you do is not feel your body. You open an app.
Sleep Score: 72
You start to worry.
“Why is it only 72?”
Then you discover:
Deep sleep: 1 hour 12 minutes.
HRV: 8% lower than yesterday.
Resting heart rate: 3% higher.
Recovery score: down.
And suddenly you start wondering:
“Is something wrong with my body?”
Maybe you simply worked late last night.
Maybe you had a cup of coffee.
Maybe you just had a strange dream.
But in front of the data, all of those things become a red number.
So we begin chasing numbers.
We change our bedtime to make the number look better.
We go running so the activity rings on our watch will close.
We start studying HRV.
We start researching recovery scores.
We become increasingly focused on our body's “score,” while becoming increasingly disconnected from our own bodies.

Is this really health management—or another form of anxiety management?
I am not saying that smart wearables have no value
Quite the opposite.
I believe this is something we need to look at honestly.
Research has found that activity trackers can indeed help some people become more physically active. Large reviews have found that interventions using activity-tracking devices can increase daily steps on average and improve certain measures of physical activity.
So the question has never been:
“Are smart devices completely useless?”
Of course they have value.
The real question is:
Has their value been marketed as something far beyond what the evidence actually supports?
A device being able to record your heart rate
does not mean it can cure your disease.
A device being able to estimate your sleep
does not mean it can make you sleep better.
A device being able to remind you to stand up
does not mean it can give you a healthier life.
And it certainly does not mean:
It can make you live longer.
“Monitoring” and “Improving” Are Not the Same Thing
This is one of the easiest things to confuse in the entire smart-health industry.
Measurement ≠ Intervention.
Data ≠ Health.
Prediction ≠ Diagnosis.
Health management ≠ Life extension.
Even research into the clinical value of smart rings is still subject to significant limitations.
A systematic review of smart rings in clinical medicine published in late 2025 included 107 studies involving approximately 100,000 participants. The research found that some smart rings demonstrated high measurement accuracy for metrics such as heart rate, HRV, and sleep.
At the same time, 65% of the studies were assessed as having moderate to high risk of bias, many algorithms were proprietary, and long-term adherence to wearing the devices also declined significantly. The authors therefore highlighted issues including algorithm transparency, population representativeness, privacy, and long-term adherence.

What does that mean?
It means:
Smart rings are becoming very good data-collection devices—but there is still a long distance between a “data collector” and a “health revolution.”
More Frighteningly, We Are Beginning to Treat Data as Ourselves
Have you noticed?
We are increasingly handing our understanding of ourselves over to machines.
Before:
“I feel pretty good today.”
Now:
“My readiness score is 83.”
Before:
“I slept pretty well last night.”
Now:
“My sleep score is 91.”
Before:
“I think I should rest today.”
Now:
“The algorithm says I need recovery.”
When did we start needing a machine to give us permission to rest?
When did we start needing an app to tell us whether we are healthy?
When did an algorithm's judgment about our bodies become more trustworthy than our own perception of ourselves?
We Are Turning “Health” Into an Examination
Every day:
Open the app.
Check the score.
Check the graph.
Check the trend.
Compare yesterday.
Compare last week.
Check the average.
And then start optimizing yourself.
Optimize sleep.
Optimize exercise.
Optimize heart rate.
Optimize recovery.
Optimize stress.
Eventually, even “relaxation” needs to be quantified.
There is something deeply ironic about this.
We created technology to reduce the burdens of everyday life.
And in the end,
we began changing the way we live in order to satisfy the technology's metrics.
And What About Jewelry?
What was jewelry originally?
It doesn't tell you:
Your heart rate.
It doesn't tell you:
Your blood oxygen level.
It doesn't tell you:
Your sleep quality.
It doesn't tell you:
How many steps you should take today.
It doesn't “do” anything.
And yet it lives with you.
It can be a ring given by a father to his son.
It can be a ring that represents a relationship.
It can be an expression of personal taste.
It can represent identity.
It can represent rebellion.
It can represent elegance.
It can represent strength.
It can represent individuality.
It can represent nothing at all.
Simply because you like it.
That is the oldest—and perhaps most precious—meaning of jewelry:
It is not meant to change you.
It is meant to express you.
Do We Really Need to Turn Every Piece of Jewelry Into a Computer?
Today's technology industry seems obsessed with putting sensors into everything.
Earbuds need to be smart.
Glasses need to be smart.
Watches need to be smart.
Rings need to be smart.
Soon, even mirrors can be smart.
It seems that if a product cannot connect to an app, cannot synchronize data, and cannot generate a report, it is somehow already behind the times.
But I have a very simple question:
Why?
Why does a ring need to know your heart rate?
Why does a piece of jewelry need to know how you slept?
Why does everything we wear have to contain a CPU?
When did we start believing:
“If something doesn't have an electronic function, it has no value?”
Even the FDA Has Warned About Smartwatches and Smart Rings
This is not simply a matter of brand opinion.
The U.S. FDA has specifically issued a safety communication warning consumers not to use smartwatches or smart rings that claim to measure blood glucose without piercing the skin. The FDA stated that it has not authorized, cleared, or approved any smartwatch or smart ring intended to independently measure or estimate blood glucose levels.
The FDA has also warned about unauthorized devices claiming to measure blood pressure, including certain smartwatches and smart rings.
This does not mean that every smart wearable is a scam.
It means we need to understand something very clearly:
The language used in technology marketing and the meaning of “reliable” in medicine are not the same thing.
The FDA itself distinguishes between low-risk products intended to encourage a healthy lifestyle and medical devices actually intended to diagnose, treat, or prevent disease.
So when a brand tells you:
“We are helping you manage your health.”
You should ask another question:
What is the evidence?
Not immediately:
When will it ship?
There Is Another Question We Rarely Stop to Consider: Who Owns This Data?
Your heart rate.
Your sleep.
Your activity.
Your stress.
Your physical condition.
Your daily patterns.
All of this information may be uploaded, stored, and analyzed.
Of course, we should care about privacy and data security.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has made clear that companies making privacy promises about health information must honor those promises. Businesses holding health-related data may also have applicable data-security obligations, and certain types of data breaches can trigger obligations under the Health Breach Notification Rule.
So the question isn't only:
“Can this ring measure it accurately?”
There is another question:
“Why does it need to know this?”
“How long will this data be stored?”
“Who can see it?”
“How exactly does the algorithm process it?”
“What happens to the data after we stop using the product?”
As we hand over more and more information about ourselves in exchange for a “health score,” perhaps we should start asking:
Are we really managing our health—or are we turning ourselves into consumers who continuously generate data?
We Are Not Anti-Technology
Let me make this absolutely clear.
We do not hate technology.
We use computers.
We use smartphones.
We use AI.
We use the internet.
And we believe technology can change the world.
But we reject one increasingly dangerous idea:
The more technology you add, the better the product must be.
No.
Sometimes,
less is more.
Something doesn't need Wi-Fi.
It doesn't need charging.
It doesn't need an app.
It doesn't need an account.
It doesn't need to upload your data.
It can still have tremendous value.
It may even give you something more important:
freedom.
Jewelry Doesn't Need to Prove Its Value
Why can a mechanical watch still be treasured decades later?
Why can a piece of jewelry be passed down through generations?
Because its value has never been limited to functionality.
Its value comes from:
aesthetics, craftsmanship, memory, identity, and emotion.
A great piece of jewelry doesn't need to tell you every day:
“You did a great job today.”
It only needs to make you feel, the moment you put it on:
This is me.
So We Want to Ask a Different Question
Maybe the thing that truly needs to become “smart”
isn't every object we wear.
Maybe it is us.
We should have the judgment to know when to exercise.
To know when to rest.
To know when data deserves our attention.
And to know when to close the app.
We don't need an algorithm to decide what is beautiful.
We don't need a scoring system to tell us how to live.
And we certainly don't need to sacrifice our sense of aesthetics, individuality, and freedom simply for the sake of being “smart.”
Let the Ring Become a Ring Again
We believe:
A ring can spin.
It can be mechanical.
It can be precise.
It can be fun.
It can be something you can't resist playing with.
It can become part of your outfit.
It can be the first detail someone notices about you.
It can give your fingers a little bit of mechanical pleasure when you're bored.
But it doesn't need to know your heart rate.
It doesn't need to know how many hours you slept last night.
It doesn't need to tell you whether you should be anxious or relaxed today.
And it certainly doesn't need to turn your life into a series of charts.
Because You Are Not a Dataset.
You are not a data point.
You are not a health score.
You are not an HRV number.
You are not a Sleep Score.
You are not a person that an algorithm can completely understand.
You are a human being.
You have your own aesthetic.
Your own personality.
Your own choices.
Your own desires.
Your own life.
Your own story.
So,
let jewelry return to where it belongs.
Not a medical device.
Not a health monitor.
Not a computer miniaturized onto your finger.
But something that truly belongs to you.
Wear What You Love.
Not What Measures You.
Let your ring express you.
Not monitor you.
Let it reveal your individuality.
Not create more data anxiety.
Let it become part of your aesthetic.
Not part of an algorithm.
We don't need to become slaves to data.
We should be the masters of our own aesthetic.
That is why,
in an age when everything is rushing to become “smart,”
we have chosen to do something surprisingly simple:
Make a ring. And make it seriously.
